What should I know about tattoos before getting one?

Tattoo artists and their styles

One of the most popular doubts when it comes to deciding to do a tattoo is "How do I choose the artist?". Well, each tattoo artist has their own style and you should always look for someone that has the adequate style for your idea.

Collect some reference photos, do some research and have a look at your favourite artist's portfolio. If you like their style, that's the first step!

Don't forget that tattoos are pieces of art and the artists put their heart into their designs. They represent who they are as artists, what they like and what their concept is. That's why some artists may not accept a tattoo that they don't think is in line with their work.

How do I prepare myself for a tattoo?

  • Use a moisturiser to hydrate the area for your new tattoo. When tattooing on dry, flaky skin (super common during cold weather), the needle tends to create more damage to the skin making the healing process more difficult, mainly on fine lines.

  • Make sure that you get some rest before your session. A good night of sleep will allow your body to have a nice amount of adrenaline and endorphins, which makes the tattoo less painful for you. Remember, the more uncomfortable and fidgety your are, the harder it will be for the artist to do a nice piece on you.

  • Avoid the use of alcohol and drugs before the appointment. Alcoholic drinks contain ethyl substances that makes your blood thinner and increases the bleeding.

  • Have a good meal before your appointment. It can prevent you from feeling dizzy. It's also good to drink lots of water to get yourself and your skin hydrated.

How to take care of your new tattoo

1- You will have the second skin applied to your fresh tattoo at the studio. Use it for 24h. You can even shower with it on the first day.

2- Take it off during a shower, stretching it from the corner (not pulling it up). Wash the tattoo gently. Let it air dry (do NOT towel dry as towels carry a lot of bacteria on them and you don't want to contaminate your new tattoo).

3- Keep your tattoo hydrated with a thin layer of tattoo balm. Take care not to let it get too wet. We don't want to let that scab be too fragile.

4- Don't scratch it and pay attention to clothes that might be rubbing off it. Do not remove the scabs (I know you want to but you must be strong and resist!)

5- Ta da! Enjoy your fresh tattoo!

What to avoid during the healing process

  • Don't soak your tattoo in water, which means you should avoid swimming pools, the sea or bathtubs. We don't want it to get infected from bacteria or other substances that might be in there.

  • Avoid the sun! A sunburn can hurt your skin even more, creating excessive  scabs. If you can't resist a beautiful sunny day *which we totally get*, try to use a loose piece of clothing that will cover it up. Don't use sunscreen on your tattoo for 1 month, they are usually super oily and can make your tattoo fade or irritate your skin.

  • Don't do heavy exercises during the healing process. It will stretch the skin which may cause bad healing, leading to lines blurring or even an infection.
